sometimes the universe decides to cut me a break: yesterday, the boss-man let us out early, so i went to the metropolitan museum of art to sketch. i haven’t been out sketching like that in many, many weeks, spending nearly every weekend visiting my father (who’s recovering from major surgery and doing far more strenuous things than he’s supposed to) and my sister and her family. most of the visitors yesterday afternoon were there to see the alexander mcqueen exhibit, which left plenty of empty galleries.

yes, i got lost inside. doesn’t everyone?

an ancient jug from the greek and roman art galleries. ellipses are hard.

another ancient jug from the greek and roman art galleries, a small terracotta cup with an owl on it. i love owls. i want to keep a few hedwigs and train them to catch rats. especially the ones in suits.

this was the early crowd at the petrie court cafe. i’ve never actually eaten there, though the prices are reasonable (considering the location, at least). it makes better use of the space in that gallery, and there’s a view of central park while you dine.

these sketches were done onsite in fountain pen and my (favorite) platinum carbon ink, with watercolor added afterwards. it felt good to be out sketching again, though i have to say, i don’t think i’ll ever get used to the hovering people do when they see someone drawing or painting en plein air. they don’t usually bother me unless they approach a little too closely. i’d say a three-foot circumference is a good distance to keep away: close enough to look or ask a question, but far enough so i’m not forced to breathe you in.

love the simple, flat lines.

some good, good stuff.

make like joan

if i could walk around in high heels and dye my hair red (and make it look like i was born with it), i’d wear this dress. with high-gloss, patent-leather red heels. and then name myself joan (harris, not d’arc.)

design sponge videos

i wish i were crafty, but i’m such a rabid mess of confused fingers.
